Poverty Among Elderly

The wall street journal article discussing social security is interesting and a good reference.

People should think about how important social security actually is in this country.

I read an article indicating that poverty among the elderly has decreased since the beginning of the social security program.

In 1960, 35 percent of individuals age 65 and older lived below poverty line. Today only 10 percent of the elderly are considered poor.

Key Phrases:

Not to be a nag, but Social Security was started well before 1960, and the fact that poverty among the elderly has decreased since 1960 does not mean that this reduction was caused by the presence of Social Security.
