Definition
A longevity bond is a fixed-income security whose payments depend on the realized mortality of a defined reference population, designed to transfer systematic longevity risk between counterparties in capital markets.
Why it matters
Longevity bonds were proposed as a capital-markets mechanism for spreading systematic longevity risk across investors who would not otherwise bear it — moving exposure off insurer and pension balance sheets and onto a broader base of capital. The market has remained small because the basis-risk problem — matching a reference population mortality index to a specific insurer's or pension scheme's book — has proven structurally difficult to solve at issuance pricing buyers will accept.
How it works
A longevity bond pays a coupon (or principal) that varies with the realized mortality of a named reference population — for example, a coupon that declines as a chosen cohort's realized survival exceeds projected survival, or that increases when realized survival falls short. The issuer (often a reinsurer or capital-markets sponsor) receives the upfront premium and pays out based on realized mortality; the buyer (often an annuity writer or pension fund holding existing longevity exposure) receives payments that offset losses if the reference population lives longer than expected. The earliest published proposal was the European Investment Bank / BNP Paribas 25-year longevity bond announced in 2004, which was withdrawn before issuance after demand fell short. Subsequent transactions have been mostly bilateral longevity swaps rather than tradable bonds — Swiss Re's Vita series (initially structured as mortality bonds rather than pure longevity bonds) and a sequence of large UK pension scheme longevity transactions in the 2010s and 2020s constitute most of the realized market.
In practice
For an individual lifetime-income participant, longevity bonds are infrastructure of the insurer's balance sheet rather than a directly accessible instrument. The relevance is structural: an insurer that has hedged its book's systematic longevity exposure faces less capital pressure from mortality improvement, which over time can translate into more competitive pricing on the lifetime income products the participant evaluates. For a fiduciary evaluating an insurer's solvency posture, the carrier's longevity risk hedging activity — whether through reinsurance, longevity swaps, or longevity bond positions — is one of several relevant factors in assessing exposure to long-tail mortality improvement.
